My father was known as Mouse.
He wasn’t small, and he wasn’t quiet. Don Meadows played tackle for his high school football team, and if a party needed a spark, he was the match. “Mouse” was a riff on his last name, a locker-room joke that outlasted his youth.
We loved him for his restless curiosity, his quick wit, and a standing policy that no hungry teenager in our orbit would ever leave his house without a second helping of dinner. Years later, my parents left Regina and relocated to Nanaimo, BC. Whenever our old friends travelled to the coast, they didn’t just stick to the mainland. They would intentionally derail their plans, shelling out for the expensive, ninety-minute ferry ride each way across Georgia Strait just to sit at my parents’ table, catch up, and stretch a brief hello into a long dinner. I didn’t know anyone else whose adult friends would cross a body of water just to hang out with someone else’s dad.
Then, in his seventies, a stroke quieted him.
From the outside, the anatomy was unchanged. But inside, something essential had stalled. Mouse lost the ability to initiate. To stand, to reach for a glass, to spark a sentence—all of it required a momentum he no longer seemed to possess. His emotional bandwidth narrowed, and his face became a held breath.
For a man who had spent his life white-knuckling his way through chronic anxiety, this looked like a catastrophe. He had always been meticulous and controlled, treating the world as if it were one loose thread away from unravelling.
When we arrived to pack up his apartment, I was prepared for the worst. I knew that he knew exactly what was happening. We were dismantling his independence, boxing up his history, and moving him into care. Yet, slumped in a chair amid the chaos, noise, and cardboard, he just watched. He was as calm as still water.
I stood there holding a stack of his favourite speculative fiction—Robert Heinlein, Ray Bradbury, Harlan Ellison—and felt a complex knot of confusion, fascination, and grief.
His anxiety hadn’t been resolved by perspective or wisdom. The stroke appeared to have damaged some of the machinery that had kept it running, and the man left behind was a stranger.
He was also, in some ways, more beautiful.
The Myth of the Finished Brain
Chocolate, muffins, or anything loaded with sugar would cause his eyes to widen in startled delight. He looked like a child who couldn’t believe the universe allowed something so good to exist. He couldn’t quite smile, but his entire face would open.
And then there was the music.
My brother would clamp a pair of high-end headphones over Mouse’s ears and cue up a playlist of West Coast jazz. As a professional musician, it had been the soundtrack of my father’s life for sixty years. The reaction was instant. His eyelids would drop, and his face would sink into itself, the exact way a tired body settles into a favourite chair at the cottage. Occasionally, his eyes would flutter open, flashing a look that said, Can you believe this shit is for real? Then he’d drift off to sleep.
The stroke had damaged his language, his initiative, and the anxious architecture of his personality. But it left the rhythm intact, and it couldn’t touch the melody.
What I was watching, though I didn’t have words for it then, was a map. Not of Mouse’s brain, exactly, but of who and what we actually are: not a mind that happens to have a body, but one layered, living system. Some pathways can be damaged. Some can remain. Some can be reached only through the side door.
And while we still have them, some can be grown.
For decades, medicine operated under a bleak assumption: childhood shapes you, adulthood sets you, and decline collects you. The brain was treated like wet cement. Whatever was scrawled in it early on stayed there until the whole block cracked apart.
We now know that model was wrong. The brain keeps editing and building. It prunes neglected alleys and builds superhighways for well-travelled routes. It alters itself after a violin scale, a traumatic grief, three or more years memorizing London’s streets, a season of chronic stress, or a child held by a calm adult.
This is neuroplasticity!
It certainly isn’t magic, and it definitely isn’t infinitely malleable. The brain does not become anything we demand of it just because we repeat the right slogan. But it does mean the human system is not truly finished.
It is more river than stone.
The Optimization Trap
The trouble is, we live in a culture that turns every biological discovery into a corporate demand. Once we realized the brain could change, the self-help industrial complex weaponized the idea. Optimize your routines. Hack your habits. Rewire your mind by Monday morning. We transformed a beautiful biological truth into another exhausting performance review.
But the nervous system doesn’t respond to slogans. It responds to conditions.
Telling an overloaded, isolated, sleep-deprived person that their brain can “rewire itself” isn’t encouragement. It’s an extra assignment. Real neurological change requires safety, repetition, tolerable load, meaning, and rest. It happens when we are stretched, but not flooded; challenged, but not crushed.
This matters because neuroplasticity is not a productivity hack. It is the biological basis for a more humane kind of hope.
We do not change by bullying ourselves into better patterns. We change by making better patterns available often enough that the system begins to trust them. The brain builds what it repeatedly uses. The body learns what it repeatedly survives. The mind grows around what the environment keeps asking of it.
This isn’t just true for us as individuals. It is true across human systems. A child doesn’t learn emotional regulation from a parent yelling at them to calm down. They absorb it through hundreds of quiet hours spent leaning against a stable adult.
A corporate team doesn’t become innovative because an executive announces “psychological safety” during a weekend retreat. They change when dissent is consistently unpunished, when mistakes are treated as data, and when people aren’t forced to make critical decisions under toxic conditions.
If you want a different output, you have to alter the environment. Instead of demanding that people “rewire their brains,” we should be asking: What conditions make better wiring possible? What reduces the load enough for learning to resume? What patterns are we practicing without realizing it?
The Brain Builds What the World Repeatedly Asks For
Those London cab drivers mentioned above didn’t set out to grow their hippocampi. They learned The Knowledge: tens of thousands of streets, landmarks, and routes through a city that wasn’t designed so much as accumulated over two thousand years. The changes to their brain structures were a byproduct of sustained, demanding engagement with a complex world. The nervous system responded, the way living systems do. It built what was being used.
Long-term meditators show changes in the brain, too, because attention is trainable. Repeated practice alters the routes information travels. Sleep matters for similar reasons. The brain renovates while you rest, consolidating the day’s experience, clearing waste, and quietly rewiring toward what the world keeps asking of it.
The important point is not that every brain can become every possible brain. It can’t. Damage matters. Age matters. Stress, health, and external conditions all matter. The important point is that capacity is not fixed at the level you woke up with this morning.
Mouse helped me understand this in the most painful way. What became limited after the stroke was not all response, and not all beauty, and not all connection. Those were still there. Music, story, sweetness, the deep and durable things—they remained available.
What seemed to close were the upper floors: the places where a person initiates, adapts, reflects, and grows into new territory. The places where we develop new ways of seeing. The places where we learn to hold more complexity without being flattened by it.
Here’s why that matters for most of the rest of us: our upper floors are still open.
The same system that protected Mouse’s deepest pleasures through catastrophic damage—that system, in you, right now, is not finished. It is not fixed at its current range. It can be developed, shaped, and strengthened. And that matters because the world is not going to get simpler, slower, or less demanding. You already know that. What you may not know is that the nervous system running beneath everything you do can be intentionally developed to meet more of what life is asking from you. It can be grown.
Not managed around, or white-knuckled through, but grown.
Complexity Requires Range
Modern life does not simply ask us to work harder. It asks us to hold more. More information. More uncertainty and more competing demands. More social signals, ambiguity and interdependence. More change happening at a speed our bodies do not always recognize as safe. That kind of world requires more than stamina. It requires range.
Range is the capacity to stay in, or return to, choice when life gets demanding. When range narrows, we become more reactive, more certain, more controlling, and more likely to reach for simple answers that may not fit the complexity in front of us. When range broadens, we can pause longer, listen better, repair faster, and keep thinking when the pressure rises.
This is not the same as being calm all the time. A sense of calm is lovely when it happens, but it is not the goal. The goal is access. Access to discernment. Access to curiosity. Access to relationships. Access to values. Access to the part of us that can respond instead of merely react. The capacity that a broad range provides is not coping. Coping helps us get through. Range helps us grow into the next version of the world we live in without losing ourselves in it.
That kind of growth does not happen by accident, and it does not happen through shame. It happens through repeated experiences of tolerable challenge. It happens through recovery after effort and relationships that help us return to ourselves. It happens when we subtract unnecessary load instead of glorifying overload. It happens when we design lives, teams, and communities that do not constantly exceed the nervous systems operating within them.
So the question is not: “How do I optimize myself?” The better question is: “What is my environment training me to become?” And then: “What would help me grow the range I need to meet this moment with more choice?”
The Side Door
For my father, there was no story of a miraculous cure. There was only a smaller, stranger mercy: the discovery that not all of him had vanished where the language had gone. Some part of Mouse remained entirely available to sweetness, to rhythm, and to story. Love didn’t need the front door of logic. It arrived through the side door of a blistering sax solo.
Watching him helped shape how I think about human growth. We do not change by cajoling, guilting, rewarding, punishing, or winning an argument with our own minds. We change by making ourselves available to better patterns. When we provide our nervous systems with enough repetition, enough safety, enough meaning, and enough recovery, the brain slowly begins to map an alternative route. A path back to connection, back to choice. A path toward the capacity to meet a more complex world without becoming smaller inside it.
That is what lived in my father’s face when the music played. It wasn’t recovery in the medical sense. It was something quieter, and perhaps deeper.
A system still listening.
A road still waiting for the jazz.
And, for the rest of us, maybe a reminder: the brain is not finished with us yet.
